CAONILLAS DAM

 
LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION


This dam is located like three miles to the East of Utuado. It is arrived at same from Utuado, crossing approximately eleven miles by highways PR-111 and PR-140. The Lake is formed by the concrete dam of 235 feet of height in the channel of the Caonillas River. Also it receives waters derived in Vivi River, Pellejas, Jordán and the high part of the Grande de Arecibo River. Its normal capacity is of 46,012 acre feet in the overflowing elevation (826 feet on the sea level). The surface of the Lake has 700 acres and has around three miles in length. Its maximum depth is of 200 feet approximately.

 

USE AND HISTORY


The dam was constructed in the 1948. Their waters are used for electric power production in the Power station Caonillas I and soon they pass to the lake Dos Bocas.  It receives its waters of a river basin of 50.4 miles square.
