VIVÍ DAM

 

 

LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION


The Viví dam is located three miles to the Southeastern of Utuado. It is arrived at the same one taking highways PR-111 and PR-605, from Utuado. The lake is formed by a massive concrete dam of 85 feet of height on the Viví River. Its original capacity of dam is of 232 acre-feet and covers a surface with eight acres at the overflowing level (1,065 feet on the level of the sea). Its drainage area is of 6.5 miles square.

 

USE AND HISTORY

The construction of the Viví dam was in charge of the Engineering Division of PREPA. It was completed in the 1952. This dam is used to derive water from the Viví River towards the hydroelectric plant on Caonillas II. These waters pass thus to the Caonillas Lake and they are used to generate electricity in the plants Caonillas I and Dos Bocas. Part of their waters is used by the PRASA for the consumption of the Utuado town. During its operation, the dam is drained in few hours in one or more occasions every day.
