Energy Theft

The Cost of Energy Theft

Every year, the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority loses over $400 million due to Energy Theft.  The cost of energy theft is transferred to our bona fide customers.  Like with every other business, economic loses over energy theft increase our operating costs.  Without adding the theft burden, these costs are already pretty high themselves.

Safety Threat

Energy Theft represents a safety danger.  Metering and line tampering can produce explosion, fire, electric discharges, property harms, and even death. Potential dangers of Energy Theft not only involve the thief himself, but also innocent bystanders, family members, friends and PREPA employees as well.

How can we eliminate Energy Theft

PREPA is determined to eliminate Energy Theft.  Our employees are trained to detect tampering or alteration signs on meters and lines.  Moreover, we use meter data electronic analysis methods to detect Energy Theft.  People held responsible will be subject to an immediate energy service disconnection, stolen energy payment recovery, fines, and criminal charges that can end up in fines and jail.

If you are ever talked into using a tampering tool to alter the meter’s  original design (both indoor and outdoor models), this is not meant to “save” energy, but to steal energy.  If you are offered to fix the meter, this is to steal energy. Energy Theft is a crime.

We can all help

Information tipped off by citizens can be useful to investigate potential Energy Theft cases. Informers that fill out the questionnaire with their full names could be contacted by PREPA to serve as witnesses in cases investigations.

Call PREPA if you witness any of the following situations:

·         A person not identified as a PREPA employee tampering with a meter or a meter base.

·         A person not identified as a PREPA employee working close to  underground or aerial PREPA energy lines.

·         If you overhear someone saying that he is paying very little for energy service since he tampered with the meter or got an “energy saver device”.

·         Excessive energy use.

Please, let us know of any suspicious activity related to a meter.  Call us at: 1-866-664-8783 (1-866-No Hurte), our Customer Service Center 787-521-3434,  or visit any of our Customer Service Offices.

Together, we can eliminate Energy Theft, the risks it entails, and reduce costs to benefit everyone in Puerto Rico.
